Government of Iraq Launches Work with the World Bank to Improve Public Financial Management

Baghdad, July 7, 2007 - Senior representatives of the Government of Iraq joined the World Bank and other international partners to launch the first in a series of workshops on public financial management. 

Through these workshops the Government and the World Bank will review the public financial management system in Iraq and identify reforms to help the Government use its financial resources more efficiently and effectively and with greater transparency and accountability, for the benefit of all Iraqis.

Rebuilding Iraq: Economic Reform and Transition (Feb. 2006)

This report focuses on the cross-cutting issues at the heart of Iraq’s transition, including the immediate challenges of reviving the economy and creating jobs, rebuilding public services responsive to citizens’ needs, and strengthening safety nets to protect the poor and vulnerable. It also addresses some overarching issues in public sector governance, particularly the management of oil revenues, the realignment of economic incentives and prices, the reform of human resource management, and the implementation of anticorruption efforts. (Access the entire report, pdf, 574 kb)

Rebuilding Iraq : Economic Reform and Transition

This report focuses on the main cross-cutting issues of Iraq’s transition and aims to support the Iraqi Government in strengthening its policymaking capacity by laying out the policy options available and discussing tradeoffs under each option. The key themes of the report are reconstruction and job creation; reform of the pricing system; managing oil revenues; and strengthening safety nets. Underpinning this complex agenda are the overarching issues in public sector governance. (EnglishArabic)


 Social Protection workshop, October 21-23, 2005 

This workshop was part of the World Bank's capacity building and policy advice efforts that have been ongoing since June 2004.  The workshop brought together the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs (MOLSA) and key MOLSA staff, as well as the Deputy Minister for Finance and policymakers from MOF, Ministry of Planning (MOP) and Veteran's Affairs (Ministry of Defense).  The workshop's goal was to review the Social Protection Policy Note prepared by the Bank and to set priorities for World Bank assistance toward a social protection strategy, including social safety nets, labor markets and pensions.
