What is the World Bank involvement in Iraq? How is IRFFI administered? IRFFI comprises two trust funds: the World Bank Iraq Trust Fund (ITF), administered by the World Bank according to its policies, and the United Nations Development Group Iraq Trust Fund, which is administered by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on behalf of itself and participating UN organizations.
What are the objectives of the World Bank Strategy in Iraq? Since 2005, the World Bank's second interim strategy in Iraq aims at helping Iraq build efficient, inclusive, transparent, and accountable institutions for stability, good governance, and sustainable economic prosperity. The ITF finances reconstruction and rehabilitation projects to be implemented by Iraqi institutions, and training/technical assistance programs designed to increase institutional capacity
What are the total donor contributions to the World Bank Iraq Trust Fund? Donors have contributed US$494 million to the World Bank Iraq Trust Fund. These funds currently support 16 grants, valued at US$439 million, that focus on strengthening Iraqi systems for the delivery of basic services, and finance textbooks, schools, pharmaceuticals and health clinics, improved social safety nets, water supply and sanitation, irrigation and drainage, and a comprehensive household survey.
What are the implementation and monitoring arrangements for projects financed by the World Bank Iraq Trust Fund? Out of 16 Trust Fund projects, the vast majority (13 projects amounting to $425 million) of projects financed by the World Bank Iraq Trust Fund are implemented by the Government of Iraq. The World Bank supervises project implementation. An independent monitoring agent based in Iraq visits project sites to help the World Bank monitor the physical implementation of projects. The monitoring agent reports its findings to the Iraqi implementing agency and to the World Bank on a monthly basis, documenting project progress with digital photos. The World Bank conducts project supervision missions, jointly with the implementing agency and the monitoring agent, about four times per year. A summary of the status of the program financed by the World Bank Iraq Trust Fund is updated monthly, and available publicly on the IRFFI website ( www.irffi.org). In addition, the World Bank prepares formal quarterly reports to donors to the trust fund. Updated as of June 6, 2008 |
